Ricochet

We arrived in Hawaii in September 1970 for a one year visiting appointment at the University - and never went back.  After a few years of sailing a Hobie 14, we became 1/3 owners of a Cal 28 in 1982.  After some fixing up, we took several inter-island cruises in that boat and enjoyed it very much.  Our favorite cruise was from Honolulu to Manele Bay on Lanai, then to Lahaina, and back home down the north coast of Molokai.

After two years and several cruises, channel crossing in a 4,000 pound boat began to get tiresome.  One day Jackie said "Get me a bigger boat.  I'm tired of corking around out there."  After looking at several boats, we discovered Ricochet, a Newport 41' sloop, with displacement of 18,000 pounds!  We fell in love with her from the first sail.  She had been quite active in the racing scene, and won the 'Round the State race when it actually went all the way around the state.  But then a period of neglect left her in need of some major attention.  So we spent 4 years fixing, renovating, and upgrading.  She's rigged with most controls to the cockpit, so the two of us can sail her easily, but we still enjoy sharing her with crew.  We have been to the Big Island twice, taken the Lahaina cruise a couple more times, sailed around Oahu, and visited Hale o Lono.  It's been several years since we have done much cruising, so we are looking forward to sailing with the HYC Cruising :& Voyaging Society.

I started sailing in 1991 with a Sea Snark advertising Kool Cigarettes.  It was 10' Styrofoam with one sail and a dagger board.  Next came a Holder 14' with a furling jib (wish I had one now, lol) and a centerboard,  then part owner of a Yamaha 25' (don't like part ownerships) and have had my own Cal 25' since 1997.  The Prim is my second Cal 25' and she behaved beautifully crossing the Molokai Channel.  Needless to say, I love my sailboat.
